4 Secrets To Developing Social Skills

Parents should start imparting social skills to their children when they are young. It is the age when they learn things fast and easy. Home is the very first place of learning so the initial social skills should begin at home and be observed and practiced at home. It is parents’ responsibility to take the initiative in training their children to develop social skills. After all parents are the first people children socialize with, aren’t they?

A child who is good with social skills is more confident in meeting life’s demands on his own in future. Parents should pass on these skills through appropriate training.

What are the basic social skills that are needed by children?

Teach your children politeness - Politeness is best expressed as the practical application of courteous manners or etiquette. It is the act of showing respect for others. Being polite means showing respect and consideration for others. It is more of a learned behavior than a taught one. Being polite means using some basic respectful words such as ‘thank you’, ‘sorry’, ‘excuse me’, etc.  Children should not feel ashamed or hesitant to use these words when needed. In order to make them use these words freely to others it should be practiced daily at home when interacting with parents and siblings.

Train them in following table manners – Parents should practice table manners so that children also get used to it. One of the basic words used at the table is ‘please’. If you use this word when you want something to be passed around the table, your children would also automatically use it when needed. Let your children join you in social gatherings. They watch you and other adults following table manners and in the process they also get trained in table manners.

Teach them to dress according to occasions – Dressing is an important factor when you present yourself at an occasion. While overdressing tends to draw unnecessary attraction, underdressing also has the same effect. That is why children should learn to dress according to occasions. Children should be taught that people form good opinions about them when they are well-dressed. A good dress sense raises a good impression.

Teach your children communication skills – Communicating well is another important social skill. Communication is the most important vehicle for social interactions.  Children should learn to talk to others with comfort and ease. Your communication would help them to develop their language skills. It also leads to a special bonding between parents and children.

Good manners and basic social skills are just as important to success in life as doing well in academics. Parents should not forget that it all starts at home.
