What's in a Marriage?

Several studies on marriage report that marriage is good for the overall well being of married individuals. Youngsters argue that long-term live-in relationships also provide some advantages but marriage definitely carries an extra measure of personal, psychological, financial advantages over cohabiting.

Research has proven that married people fare better than divorced, unmarried individuals in terms of physical and psychological well-being.  Factors that help in this regard are:

1 Mutual support

2 Mutual caring

3 Companionship

4 Intimacy

5 Financial advantages

Marriage also acts as a buffer in the sense it protects married couples against unfavorable life events or situations such as disease, poverty, and loss of loved ones due to death, etc.  The marital bond is seen as a social and psychological source, which helps the involved partners withstand loss and misfortunes. We can say marriage restrains the severity of the effects of events and circumstances that might otherwise result in lower well-being.

Positive relationship between marriage and mental and physical health is emphasized by many studies. Married individuals are said to be more satisfied in spiritual, professional, financial and emotional aspects.

Marriage is very beneficial to human kind. Some of the benefits are as follows:

Married couples enjoy a better physical and emotional health. Because of the security, love and other features that accompany a marriage they enjoy a disease-free life. Even if they fall sick their recovery takes a shorter time because of loving care given by the partner. Their motivation to live happily with each other makes them take a better care of their health. With the result, married partners live healthier and longer.

Faithfully married couples experience a more satisfying physical pleasure and they are also emotionally satisfied because of the mutual satisfaction.

Psychologists say that marriage helps in maintaining a stable mental health. When compared to divorced, unmarried singles, married people are reported to have lower rates of depression, drug and alcohol addictions and mental disorders.

Suicide levels are low in married individuals, while divorced people are known to have the highest risk of committing suicide. Loneliness is one of the main reasons for people to commit suicide. When you are married you are not lonely and you have someone to share your feelings with. So the thoughts of suicide are very much averted in a marriage.

Marriage gives you the ability to manage stress. Married partners go through a lot of life changes that might create an undue stress on them. But since they have each other to share their hardships with, they are able to withstand life's stresses and strains.

Married couples are reported to have higher levels of commitment to their relationship. Due to this fact, married partners are happier and enjoy a trusting relationship.

Married men and women maintain love and intimacy, which makes them happier than single or cohabiting couples. One's personal, psychological and spiritual growth depends mainly on the nature of his relationship with his counterpart in marriage. When couples have the capacity to love selflessly they can appreciate marriage better and add an enriching dimension to their life experience.
