Remember
seeing
promotional
offers
on
Credit
Card
Balance
transfers?
They
looked
like
this:
Get
an
unbelievable
0%
Balance
Transfer*
WOW
isn't
this
a
great
deal?
Yes
of
course!
Usually
such
0%
interest
lasted
for
the
promotional
period
of
about
3-6
months.
The
system
of
balance
transfer
allows
a
credit
card
holder
to
transfer
the
balance
on
his
existing
card
to
another
card
and
enjoy
the
0%
interest
period.
This
was
a
great
offer
for
those
who
could
now
purchase
and
repay
without
paying
a
single
penny
as
interest.
The
loophole
in
this
system
was
that
consumers
could
jump
similar
cards
by
transferring
balances
after
having
used
the
promotional
period
and
thus
avoid
payment
of
interest.
To
plug
this
hole,
credit
card
companies
started
charging
fees
for
balance
transfers.
This
virtually
killed
the
concept
of
0%
balance
transfer.
The
interest
payment
if
now
replaced
with
transfer
fees
and
¡§other
fees¡¨.
Credit
card
companies
introduced
this
to
cover
their
costs.
Penalties
on
such
cards
are
high
and
issuing
fees
on
such
cards
are
higher
than
normal
cards.
What
you
MUST
watch
out
if
for
the
interest
rate
after
the
promotional
period.
This
could
be
a
bomb
waiting
to
explode
as
this
post
promotional
rate
is
normally
higher
than
a
regular
card.
So
is
a
balance
transfer
a
bad
choice?
Why
should
I
transfer
it
from
a
regular
card?
It
is
an
effective
method
of
saving
on
interest,
if
your
credit
card
balance
is
fairly
high.
The
issuing
fees
and
balance
transfer
fees
would
then
be
negligible
compared
to
the
savings
on
interest.
After
the
promotional
period
you
must
be
able
to
pay
your
dues
on
time
as
penalties
and
interest
on
unpaid
balances
could
be
exorbitant.
To
avoid
this,
you
could
look
at
transferring
the
balance
again
to
another
card
at
the
end
of
the
promotional
period.
Always
work
out
the
savings
on
interest
and
make
sure
you
read
up
the
credit
card
contract
for
hidden
fees.
The
hidden
fees
usually
ruin
all
your
calculations
on
savings.
For
those
with
a
lower
balance,
we
recommend
you
not
to
transfer
the
balance
to
another
card.
You
would
be
better
of
paying
the
interest
on
the
regular
card.
The
concept
of
0%
should
not
more
mislead
you.
If
you
have
small
balances
on
multiple
cards,
then
you
could
consolidate
this
into
one
card
by
transferring
the
balance.
But
make
sure
you
don¡¦t
transfer
the
balance
again
after
the
promotional
period.
The
whole
idea
of
the
transfer
in
this
case
is
to
save
on
interest,
so
work
out
your
financials
and
pay
up
on
time
to
make
your
balance
transfer
a
smooth
and
fruitful
one.
The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness
Amazon Price: $16.49 Used Price: $13.85 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 Review (rating: 5): Great book. He does a nice job laying out the basics. As he says there is nothing in there you haven't heard from your Grandmother or the bible. It's not a "Christian" book, it's a get-yourself-safe from financial risk book. I highlighted it and went back and took notes to make sure I captured the data. Personally, I am not highly in debt but there was a lot of good lessons learned. This book is for everyone- young and old, in debt or not, married or single. I avoid books like this but it was recommended to me and I'm glad I took shot. Get the workbook- it helps.
Nice job, Dave. Great book.
A Lesson Before Dying (Oprah's Book Club)
Amazon Price: $10.36 Used Price: $1.13 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 Review (rating: 2): I picked up this book with great anticipation, as I knew it was selected for Oprah's Book Club and had won a couple of awards, including the National Book Award. Although I had never read any of the writer's previous works, his name is familiar and so, naturally, I assumed I would be in for a dramatic and stunning emotional rollercoaster. I wasn't.
This book is so poorly written I really hope that my suspicions are true and that all the pages of the original text were replaced by a 15 year old promising prankster. While the main premise of the book has the potential to be a real winner, Gaines fails to give it the depth it really needs. Instead, he treads above the surface throughout the entire book, using superficial emotions with superficial, and stereotypical, vocabulary. At the end, we get what everyone expects, the standard tearjerker in a Lifetime movie. The book was a chore to read, with Gaines' digressions making it nearly unbearable (must we know about every single person that attended the school play, and must we go through the play in its entirety?).
Nevertheless, Gaines does have an incredible way of making the story seem realistic. The main character, Grant Wiggins, is clearly not a writer yet when he telling the story it is as if he were simply talking to an old friend. Still, while Wiggins is not a writer, Ernest J. Gaines is, and an established one too. One would've hoped that a man with his clout would give us the mature literary quality one expects. Instead, we have this overwrought and sluggish lump of a book that has the potential to be refined into a literary masterpiece yet is nothing more than a bad extension to a Tyler Perry play.

Diversity Amid Globalization: World Regions, Environment, Development (3rd Ed...
Amazon Price: $100.26 Used Price: $4.99 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 Review (rating: 5): I took this course not knowing what I was getting into. I needed one more class to certify my financial aid. I had been wondering about globalization and other issues affecting the new world economy. If you want to know what the future holds for you and how you can make your millions, this is a great read. I don't know why the other reviewer is complaining about the difficulty. I am certain that you are being taught what you need to know. Read a bit slower, think some more, and have some discussions with your classmates and your professor.
Debt Cures 'They' Don't Want You to Know About
Used Price: $12.29 Average Customer Rating: 2.5 Review (rating: 1): I bought this book at the store prior to reading the reviews here. ONE star is too much to give! There is no good information in this book. If you need help, check out Jerrold Mundis and Dave Ramsey. Both write sound advice. Forget this book. I wish I had! What a waste of money!!!!!!!!! DON'T BUY IT!!!!!!
